Possible converter or flexplate failure. Driver was ok except for a unspecified foot injury from transmission pieces entering cockpit. Scary stuff here remember never skimp on safety.

Edit action starts at 1.40ish

Wow, lucky driver, looks like a fair chunk of that went into the cabin rather than out the sides. More steel plate plz.

WTF?? The transmission did that???

Yup hot tranmission fluid on headers is a bad thing. Probably cut a fuel line too. I’ve seen converters let go but never like that.

For those who don't want to waste their time, the “good part” (only in quote because it’s horrible” starts at 1:50. No need to watch the lead up.

I’m sure he had a trans shield or else he wouldn’t have a leg but that was just nuts.

Probably a good thing he wasn’t sitting directly over the part that came up through the windshield :O

Those shields are such a joke IMO. Using an SFI bellhousing is a much better idea. Well, really the way to go is to use an SFI case too.

I have seen converter make a nice pop, but that was unreal. I had no clue this was possible. Glad the drive was ok. That didn’t look survivable at first.

That looks like some shitty sheet metal shielding. Hopefully he runs something a little thicker next time.

Here’s some pics for fun. Sprag failure on a 727.

Pretty sure the sfi bellhousing got wiped out. My local track won’t let you run without it but who knows. Never seen one let go like that.

Fun fact: Ive put three holes into a transmission case before.

Knowing that, its pretty obvious to me that one or more bearings in the trans had individual ball bearings come out of the race. Because it happened in motion, the explosion to me looks like something deep in the case caused fluid to vent straight onto the cut exhaust. Ball bearings or an exploded clutch plate could do that. The converter could do it, but to me it looks like something farther back with a lot more fluid around it.
